Dedication Ceremony 5/2/09 was a success!

City officials, the Mayor, Raleigh Parks & Rec, families and skaters participated in the Ribbon Cutting ceremony and Dedication. Then the skaters took to the bowls for some action.

Thanks to the City of Raleigh for hosting the event. Thanks to Endless Grind Skate Shop, for providing the free T-shirts. Thanks to Project 58-Vertical Urge for providing discounted safety pads for skaters.

Approx 300 plants were planted, putting the "Marsh" in the Creek. Big thanks to all that showed up and supported the beautification effort. We had several skaters and workers from city helping. Plenty of sunshine and water for today. Healthy plants tomorrow.

Here are the current list of rules and regulations for the skatepark, looks like it will require pads and helmets afterall.

Rules and Regulations
1. Enter at your own risk. Flying objects are not uncommon. Skate within your
abilities. Stay in control of your equipment. Watch out for other skaters.
2. Signed waivers are required for all skate park participants BEFORE using the
skatepark.
3. Appropriate safety gear must be worn at all times. Violation of skatepark rules,
including failure to wear a proper helmet, kneepads, elbow pads, and closed toed
shoes will subject persons to citation and other consequences including expulsion
from the skatepark.
4. Bicycles, scooters, glass containers, and outside ramps, jumps, and obstacles are
prohibited. Restrict skating to features specifically designed for that purpose.
5. Respect skatepark surfaces -tagging or graffiti are not allowed.
6. Inspect skating surfaces before using and remove any trash or debris that may
prevent a smooth, safe ride. Do not ride damaged, wet, or icy surfaces.
7. Report hazardous conditions, damages to skate park surfaces, and other
maintenance concerns to the Parks and Recreation Department at 919-831-6640
or 919-565-6079.
8. This is a drug-free zone. Drug use/possession and alcohol consumption are
prohibited.
9. Respect other park users - abusive language and loud music are not allowed
within the park.
10. The City of Raleigh reserves the right to change the hours of operation.
11. Call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.

Grand Opening" ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday. MAY 2nd! This is the official opening of the park.

Be there and thank the city council members for voting in the extra money to include the features that were to be cut out due to the rising cost of construction.

Construction continues on the water holding basin just south of the flow area and the landscaping needs to settle until 4/25.

A (mandatory helmet) rule will be voted on by the city council on April 7th, indicating that there may be Helmets required at the park, if there is enough votes.

current or future community center – but skate park will be unstaffed

Intended for skate boarders and in-liners only

Thursday, February 5. Crew moving fast in the warm weather, putting final touches on 2nd Jersey barrier. Then the crew hit the park with skateboards to test the flow area. Skate lines flow sweet and fast in this crash-up derby of a bowl with the hips, spine and extensions getting worked. Observed an ollie off the hip to 50-50 grind off the large tombstone and 50-50's across the slant extension above the hip. Lots of lines, but beware, it looks like one rider at a time due to the speed and angles involved. The street section and advanced bowl area are next to finish, with more use of the boulders that were yanked out of the ground. The park is looking like it will be more for intermediate/advanced skaters, as the challenging obstacles are a little more pronounced than they look on the blueprint.

What I think the city needs to work on before the ensuing opening.

1. Better communication between the builder and city, utilizing features that are unique and longlasting, like the rock in the flow and street area.
2. A series of meetings with local residents that can acclimate the non-skater community with the needs of the city and skaters.
3. An easy, common-sense rule about signed waivers and required safety equipment. Skaters/parents should not have to go off-site to notarize and pay for a picture ID card.
4. Help place a bus stop closer to the park.

Spent the morning talking to the workers. Although their spirits were down because of another round of recent thefts to their equipment, they were moving fast. Working in the cold weather, building a bridge across the far end of the combi-bowl to form the coping for the over-vert pocket. Yes, there will be an over-vert corner in the questionable far side of the combi with steel coping.

Reviewing the skatepark layout, I have to say this is going to be one big, serious skatepark! Lots of lines, although the flow area may be a smash-up-derby. The quality of the concrete in this cold weather is unbelievably good, especially when you consider the concrete has problems in anything under 40 degrees. Smooth transitions and lots of obstacles thrown at you from all directions. Yes, the two extension walls with the channel in the flow area, have pool coping block. The extension on the other side of the flow area and over the spine, is slanted back and it's going to take some man-sized skating to get a grind off that beast. The Combi-bowl is very big and I'm glad to report, the round pool portion is curved in at the edges and made to go back-to-back and not be a one-hit-wonder. The hips will be amazing, low-high, high-low and different on each side as they go into the shallow portion. Since the shallow is square, you are going to need to check your speed or go Mach into the down-Waterfall portion, then into the round, very like the Upland Combi which I grew up skating. Although this skatepark seems to be placed in the most unusual, out-of-the-way location, the quality of work that Artisan has done so far is outstanding. I have to commend their dedication through this trying episode. Good Job.

"Got to work today and we started laying out the coping for the big bowl. gonna be pretty intense. 11foot deep end. wild.

carried the coping over to where the curve ledge will be up top, really long section. the park is starting to have a physical layout which is rad.

Slight set-back, but construction continues

This weekend, construction equipment was burglarized and property was taken at the site. It was a senseless crime of opportunity that only makes it harder for the crew to provide a much-needed skatepark to the community. Here at Harsh Creak, we would like to ask any persons with knowledge of this act, to forward the information to the local police department.

Update on construction continues. The fill dirt is now compacted and the support rebar will be in place soon, for the concrete pour. Schedule is still on to pour in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned.

Possible issues with the rocky terrain

This just in:

Our intrepid reporter on site reports to Harsh Creek. Visiting the park again today. Much more earthwork had been done. I spoke with a guy from Stewart engineering and asked about all the bedrock. He said that there was a tough day when the project had nearly been called off because of the abundance of rock. Fortunately, he said, they’re working with some of the city’s GCs and they contacted the city and arranged to get the financing solutions taken care of and the project continued. He also said that because of all the rock, they are going to dig out the transition areas, then bring in topsoil to backfill so that Artisan can drag the transitions. Otherwise, they wouldn’t stand a chance with all the rock. It will probably make for the best transitions ever doing it this way. Also, they should be ready for the concrete in about 2 weeks. He said they were a week behind schedule because of all the rock and required problem-solving. Still, only 2 weeks until ready for crete?

Groundbreaking was a success

The ceremony commenced today @ 10:00. Skaters showed up early to spar on the hockey rink for some very old-school manuals and kick-flips.

In attendance were some of the city leaders that helped move this project forward, such as the planning director for the city of Raleigh, David Shouse.

After their turn speaking, the leaders grabbed a gold shovel for the final shot.

Good times had by all and the project can now move forward. The ceremony was taped by the Raleigh Television Network RTN and we'll have a link to view the video soon.

Wanted to make sure you knew about the groundbreaking ceremony planned for the Skate Park next week. The groundbreaking is in conjunction with another 2003 bond project, the Marsh Creek Community Center . It is Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 10 am in the park at 3016 New Hope Road . Below is a picture of the proposed skate park.
